United Nations SDGs: Advocating Gender Equality and Diversity
I Room Summit 2
“This Is a Man’s World”, one of the most famous pop songs of all time, is typical of the “man-has-done-all attitude”, and hence of everything gender equality, the fifth of seventeen UN Sustainable Development Goals, is about. But this UN SDG is that, and much more for it does not stop at advocating that men and women should be treated equally via being granted equal rights in terms of job opportunities, salaries, etc. – which is the least that can be demanded -, but, from domestic abuse through feminicide to sexual harassment and sex trafficking, it also poses the question of the long overdue elimination of all harmful practices against women and girls and to put an end to centuries of “male power” and coercive and oppressive tactics against the so-called “weaker sex”. This panel shall examine and highlight some acute problems that are faced, as well as effective societal changes, on the road to gender equality.
